Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body. It occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed, usually by a herniated disk, bone spur, or spinal stenosis.

Types of Sciatica

Acute Sciatica

Sudden onset of pain that typically resolves within a few weeks.

Alternating Sciatica

Pain switches sides, affecting different legs at different times (less common).

Chronic Sciatica

Persistent pain that lasts for more than three months and may require ongoing management.

Bilateral Sciatica

Pain affects both legs simultaneously (rare and may indicate serious underlying conditions).

Diagnosis Tests and Results

    • X-rays: Check for bone spurs or other skeletal abnormalities.
    • MRI: Provides detailed images of the spine and soft tissues to identify herniated disks or nerve compression.
    • CT Scan: Offers detailed cross-sectional images of the spine.
