Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints but can also impact other tissues and organs. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and joint damage.

Types of Osteoporosis

Seropositive RA

Patients test positive for rheumatoid factor (RF) and/or anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies. It is the most common form and often associated with more severe disease.

Seronegative RA

Patients do not have detectable RF or anti-CCP antibodies but still exhibit clinical symptoms of RA.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

RA occurring in children under 16 years old, characterized by persistent arthritis.

Diagnosis Tests and Results

    • Rheumatoid Factor (RF): Presence of RF antibodies.
    • Anti-CCP Antibodies: Specific marker for RA.
    • Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP): Indicators of inflammation.
    • X-rays: Detect joint damage and erosion.
    • MRI and Ultrasound: Provide detailed images of joints and soft tissues to assess the extent of inflammation and damage.

Symptoms

Stages of Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Inflammation of the joint capsule, swelling, and synovitis.
    • Symptoms include joint stiffness and mild pain.
    • Inflammation spreads, causing damage to cartilage and narrowing of the joint space.
    • Increased pain, swelling, and limited range of motion.
    • Significant cartilage and bone damage, joint deformities, and loss of function.
    • Severe pain, stiffness, and difficulty in daily activities.
    • Complete destruction of the joint, loss of function, and severe pain.
    • Possible disability requiring joint replacement surgery.
