Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a group of inherited genetic disorders that cause progressive muscle weakness and loss of muscle mass. The disorders vary in which muscles are affected, the degree of weakness, how fast they worsen, and when symptoms begin. 

Types

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

The most common form, primarily affecting boys, with early onset and rapid progression.

Becker Muscular Dystrophy

Similar to DMD but with later onset and slower progression.

Myotonic Dystrophy

Characterized by prolonged muscle contractions and affecting adults.

Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy

Affects shoulder and hip muscles.

Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy

Affects muscles of the face, shoulders, and upper arms.

Congenital Muscular Dystrophy

Present at birth or shortly after, affecting both boys and girls.

Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy

Affects muscles of the eyes and throat.

Distal Muscular Dystrophy

Affects muscles of the hands, feet, forearms, and lower legs.

Emery-Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy

Affects muscles of the upper arms, lower legs, and heart.
