An Introduction To Oil Therapy For Mind, Body & Soul

Shirodhara is a form of oil therapy that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The treatment involves the gentle pouring of warm oil over the forehead, specifically on the “Third Eye” or Ajna Chakra, in a continuous stream. The oil used in Shirodhara is usually sesame oil, but other oils such as coconut, mustard or even milk, buttermilk or even medicated oils can be used as well.

The benefits of Shirodhara are thought to be many and varied. Physically, the treatment is said to help with conditions such as stress, anxiety, insomnia, and certain types of headaches. Mentally, it is believed to improve concentration, memory, and overall mental clarity. Emotionally, the treatment is said to bring a sense of calm and balance to the mind, promoting feelings of well-being and relaxation.

Shirodhara is also thought to have a purifying effect on the body, helping to remove toxins and impurities. Additionally, it is said to improve circulation, strengthen the immune system, and promote overall physical and emotional health.

The therapy can be done in different ways:

Dhara : The oil is poured in a continuous stream over the forehead.

Takra Dhara: The oil is mixed with buttermilk and poured in a continuous stream over the forehead.

Ksheera Dhara: The oil is mixed with milk and poured in a continuous stream over the forehead.

Takra Dhara: The oil is mixed with butter milk and poured in a continuous stream over the forehead.

Jala Dhara: The oil is mixed with water and poured in a continuous stream over the forehead.

Shirodhara is typically done in conjunction with other Ayurvedic therapies, such as massage and herbal remedies, and is best performed by a trained Ayurvedic practitioner. It is important to note that Shirodhara should not be performed on individuals with certain health conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, or certain types of skin disorders, and should always be done under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.
