Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of skin cells. This buildup results in scaling on the skin’s surface. Inflammation and redness around the scales are fairly common. Psoriasis typically develops in cycles, flaring for a few weeks or months, then subsiding for a time.

Types of Psoriasis

Plaque Psoriasis

The most common form, characterized by dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.

Inverse Psoriasis

Causes bright red, shiny lesions in skin folds, such as under the breasts or around the genitals and buttocks.

Guttate Psoriasis

Appears as small, drop-shaped, scaling lesions on the trunk, arms, or legs.

Pustular Psoriasis

Characterized by white pustules (blisters of noninfectious pus) surrounded by red skin.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis

The least common type, causing a widespread, fiery redness and shedding of the skin over most of the body.

Nail Psoriasis

Affects fingernails and toenails, causing pitting, abnormal nail growth, and discoloration.

Psoriatic Arthritis

Involves joint pain, stiffness, and swelling in addition to skin symptoms.
