Abhyangam

It is a form of oil massage that is considered to be an important part of Ayurvedic treatment as it helps in balancing the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The massage technique involves long strokes, kneading, and circular movements, which are applied with varying pressure to different parts of the body.

The process of Abhyangam usually involves the following steps:

  1. The person is made to lie down on a massage table and is covered with a towel or sheet.
  2. Warm herbal oil is applied all over the body, starting from the head and working down to the feet.
  3. The massage therapist uses long strokes, kneading, and circular movements to massage the body, paying special attention to the joints and pressure points.
  4. The massage usually lasts for about 45-60 minutes, and the person is then allowed to rest for a few minutes to allow the oil to penetrate the skin.

The benefits of Abhyangam include:

  1. Helps in reducing stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
  2. Improves blood circulation and helps in detoxifying the body.
  3. Relieves muscle and joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation.
  4. Nourishes the skin, making it soft and supple.
  5. Helps in improving the quality of sleep.
  6. Balances the doshas and promotes overall well-being.

It is important to note that Abhyangam is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions such as fever, skin infections, and open wounds. It is always best to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before undergoing any Ayurvedic treatment.
